Peak of the Desert Heat by Bogdan Dragos

To work at the peak

of the desert heat

The adults told him he’d need

an injection for that

and the man dressed in white

grabbed his arm and lifted it

and stung him with the needle in the shoulder

and injected the serum

It took away all doubt

from his mind

and all weariness from his heart

and limbs

He was ready

“Good boy,” the adults said

and patted him on the back

They gave him an assault riffle,

one he’d held and used

before for practice,

and sent him out of camp

and towards the enemy soldiers

It’ll be fine

Bogdan writes of a plight that many of us are oblivious to. Child soldiers. They are born into biased and oppressive atmospheres where they eat, drink and breathe hatred and violence. But a child will be a child and their minds and hearts are impressionable and delicate. Brainwashing them with words or drugs is the way to ensure mindless submission. It’s such a sad and heartbreaking situation.
    Congratulations Bogdan!

    1. Sad and heartbreaking defines it quite right ˚‧º·(˃̣̣̥__˂̣̣̥)‧º·˚

And while not exactly to the same extent, sometimes even we adults can come dangerously close to the mindset of a child soldier.
After all, aren’t there hundreds of voices (mass media…) whose only purpose is to position us to see things from their perspective?

      1. The problem is everyone wants everyone to think and agree with them. It’s the cause of all manner of troubles, including wars……

        1. Yep. In our times the internet plays a major role in this.
I mean, when it first came out, the concept was to unite people and ease communication. Unfortunately, it achieved very much the opposite effect. People do come together, but they form echo chambers and only want to hear what they agree with while seeing all who disagree or have different points of view as the enemy.
          So now here we are…

        2. True. And I guess the human instinct is to want everyone to agree with us. To our failing….

So now here we are as you say…….

    1. Thanks, Don!

Yeah, sometimes it can actually be fine. Sometimes your enemies are far more humane than your allies.

Wow, a dark story indeed. One dose of a serum, a murderer is born. Science can do evil deeds.

      And when it’s not science… it’s politics.
