Sycamore by Joni Caggiano

A Sycamore tree standing tall against the backdrop of the setting sun

skin barren exposing my dense white trunk as I sigh

color falls from me as the cold earth is biting

absent my ample blanket to shelter birds passing by

roots tickling, as moles clawing earth, burrowing fast

eyeing a fat grub, eating, and hastily moving on

juicy earthworm, now dessert, as he tunnels past

leaves miss clapping and crooning for this bitter land

I say goodbye to the sun, as my sap seeps tears

skies crying, drape me in ice, but still, nobly I stand

Joni’s poetry personifies the mighty Sycamore and the beauty of changing seasons. The cold, winter days may rob it of its leafy splendour but it remains standing proud and tall waiting for kinder and warmer days. That is the power of perseverance and resilience.
    Congratulations Joni!

  5. Joni, dear poet, you became the Sycamore.. You were the witness to your color falling, your leaves no longer clapping, your shelter for birds now bare and even observing below the surface life going on, moles snatching grubs around your roots, insulated from the biting winter winds that whip around you…bare and unprotected and yet,,,you are the tree that will be reborn again and again in the Spring… I loved this..your Sycamore captivated me from beginning to end…Big hugs and much love dear word artist❤️

Karima, my very kind and talented friend, I read this comment out loud to my husband and it brought tears to his eyes. Your comment was beautiful and poetic. You have truly touched my heart. I believe I will always feel a kindred spirit with the trees. They were the refuge for a very frightened and scared little girl growing up. They gave me a place to hide and play as I talked to them. The big oaks especially protected and hid me from the view of those I was afraid of. You always get me, thank you so much for reading and for the beautiful comment. Sending you bundles of love and prayers for a wonderful 2022. Love to you my friend, Joni

Oh thank you Ken, I truly appreciate you reading and your kind comment. I like that line too, sometimes I write something and later I go wow did I write that. I think it is because we get in that zone, “I write to beautiful soft music without lyrics,” and that is when the words really come. I am so glad you liked it. Thanks again my friend. Big hugs, Joni xoxox

Oh thank you so much Joe, how kind of you to comment. Yes, when we think what a tree survives one only wishes we could hold a talk with the truly ancient creatures. Maybe one day we will stop chopping them down. Hope you are enjoying your Sunday, hugs Joni xoxo

  14. Wow Joni, I love how you morphed into being the sycamore and the oozing tears but still you stand in the chill. Captivating and lyrically expressed my friend.

And you are a walking expression of standing nobel in your life!
