What’s in a Name by Shobana Gomes

Knitted in the document of names, the journey begins
Of what do you see the traits begin or how
How does the trail reveal its roots
A name stands to gain footage on scrolls
Like a mushrooming tree, it gains its foothold
A surname likened to a family
The name that catapults the flames of identity
To know the branches that hold infirmity
of royalties and commoners
A genial contrast to an unbeknownst
a continuing identity
One that cannot be erased or disguised
The outcome of ingenuity from the days of yore

And hence the question – What is in a name?
The very essence of indestructibility.

Shobana’s poem frames an individual’s identity in powerful words. A name isn’t simply a name but a connection, a relevance, a past, present , and future revelation. Though each of us may have our own individual existence, the bonds that surround us cannot be ignored. Some names may ring louder than others, but there’s a fine line separating a prince from a pauper. The winds of time can blow either which way. I’m satisfied and proud of my name. I hope that many of you feel the same.
    Congratulations Shobana!

  2. Thank you so much Terveen. You are absolutely right in your analysis. One’s identity is determined by a name.

  3. Oh, what a gorgeous piece from my friend Shobana Gomes. Names are identifiers, names are root-revealers, but like you i ask again, what really is in a name that it’s so much valued. What a thought-provoking poem!

Dear Shobana the cast system can be a cruel system or a kind system depending upon your name indeed. What is the real value of a name does it make the values, kindness, or humanity of an individual. We should be able to feel proud of who we are because of our actions. This is a very well written piece that says so much about the power certain names do have and others do not. This was a lovely impactful closing line,

“And hence the question – What is in a name?
    The very essence of indestructibility”.

Blessings to you and I really enjoyed this piece., thank you. Hugs, Joni
