It’s All a Game by Bogdan Dragos

but what are we alive for

if not to play

and enjoy

life itself is

but a game

and the best at it are

those who don’t

grow up, those who can

still view it

as such

She tried to teach her

four children

this truth

that’s why she brought them

into the backyard

where all the small trash bags,

so well wrapped in tape,

were laid on the grass,

and told them,

“It’s like that Easter game

where you find

the eggs. Only this time it’s

with small trash bags,

and you’ll be hiding

them.” She clapped

her hands a few times. “So let’s

go then. Mommy will

play along this time.

Let’s hide

the bags.”

It was the police

who came to

search for them later

“Can we build a dad

with all

these parts?” asked

one of the kids

after the policemen

won the game

and retrieved all the hidden

bags, opened them and

revealed the body

“Nah,” said mother, “Dads

aren’t fun. Their

games have too

many rules. They’re

too serious.”

And she started laughing

as the policemen

took her away

and the children

with her

only the policemen

didn’t laugh

They were probably all

Bogdan writes of life and the dangerous games that some play. This piece instantly gave me ‘mother knows best’ vibes. Though this mom’s cutting and chopping isn’t limited to the kitchen. The children play a crucial part in this tale. It’s innocence adulterated by desperate want and trust in the wrong person. I hope not too many dads were sacrificed in the making of this poem. Another gory and unbelievable masterpiece.
    Congratulations Bogdan!
