The Way to Worship the Devil by Bogdan Dragos

A red faced evil looking devil with red horns on its head

the black metal was

blasting

in the speakers

but the

painted faces on

her wallpapers

no longer grinned

at her

and no longer whispered

too bad,

the drugs wore off

Well, the best part about

living with grandpa

was that she could

simply get out in the

middle of the night

dressed however she wanted

and return in the morning

with whatever she could get

The old man

wasn’t like the

stereotypes she read about

on the internet

He spent all his days

and nights

in his

bedroom,

hunched over a small desk

sitting in a

creaky chair

that meowed every time he

turned a page

in the notebook he

was writing

‘He probably does more

drugs than

I do,’ she thought.

A few days ago

she went into the

bathroom

and found a bunch of

burnt logs and twigs

in the bathtub

Being high

an’ all that,

she didn’t question it

But now it was

a good time

to think about it

She walked into grandpa’s

bedroom

and didn’t find him

there. On his desk

the notebook was left open

There was big writing

on the left page

THE WAY WE SERVE THE DEVIL

IS BY FEARING HIM.

FEAR BRINGS HIM TO US.

THEREFORE THE CHRISTIANS WHO

ARE RUNNING AWAY FROM HIM

ARE DOING IT WRONG.

JUST THE SAME, THE

DEVIL-WORSHIPERS WHO LOVE HIM

ARE DOING IT WRONG.

FEAR!

FEAR IS THE ANSWER.

Holy shit, she thought.

Grandpa

was metal as fuck!

A few days later

she returned home with the

words tattooed on

her belly, just below

the breasts

She was still

waiting for the

right time

to show her grandpa

Perhaps

after another drink

or something a bit

stronger

Bogdan gives us a look into the dark lives of an old man and his granddaughter. One possessed by the unholy, the other high on illegal substances. But both bound by things unheard and unseen, chaotic and impulsive. It appears that either could believe that they are the devil themselves. Faith can be powerful irrespective of its intent, and intoxication often helps to reinforce this.
    Congratulations Bogdan!

This is a very thought provoking story. You may think I am nuts my friend but when I am feeling really tempted to do something I know is wrong, I literally tell the devil to get back away from me. It works for me. I think it is interesting to see how the girl in the story assumed that someone old was capable of evil. We are all capable of being evil but hopefully those with faith, will avoid doing it because of their faith. I admire the way you make us all think about things many people don’t want to think about. I have to admit for a minute I thought he was going to be a writer also. haha Keep making us think Dragos. Sending big hugs, Joni

You know what they say, “the devil is in the details” :))
The ability to be and do evil is in all of us, from children to elders. I think it is important to know that, and to learn to control it before we find ourselves controlled by it.
