my lingering limbs upon a solitary tree
eyes indigo, darting in a hypnotic state
heart akin to a hummingbird’s wing
Orpheus fashions purity in poetic bliss
fish, even rocks move to trade a kiss
my unsheathe skin lay on Balkan rock
notes from lyre waltz on savory breasts
birds kissing his image on the Aegean sea
smelling him, a ribbon amid my thighs
foreseeing soft touch in darkening skies
when next, clinging passionately was I
my heart and body aching for his voice
stagnant rocks and fish now lay lifeless
Apollo’s Greek son beheaded by the sea
death looms, for I now no longer wish to be

Joni’s poetry is a fine tribute to love, death, poetry, music, and the afterlife. Her beautiful words are a miniature story of love, passion, and tragic loss. The way she makes the reader rise and fall from start to finish is a commendable feat in writing. Love is a fascinating emotion and brings with it much thought and tough wisdom. To lovers who have laughed and cried and found bliss in each other’s arms.
Congratulations Joni!

You have a great gift. Joni,
when you write about love…even rocks trade kisses and you bring the Classical names and stories into familiar ocean beds or satin sheet ones where just his smell is like a ribbon “amid your thighs” I always enjoy your writing especially when you allude to the ebb and rise of love’s tides. You speak of the life and death of love in the same verse. Haunting and beautiful. Much love to you, dear Joni… Karima

Hello Karima you are such a sweetheart. Thank you for all your kind words, they mean a lot to me. I often mix love and death, again the ebb and flow. It is obvious that we both love nature. I feel so connected to nature and so blessed to be able to have people read my work. Thank you so much dearest Karima and much love to you. I will read you again soon when I can sit on the spring porch and watch nature. Big hugs too. xoxoxoxo

Oh how sweet beautiful Katydid. So delighted you enjoyed this and I do appreciate your kind comments. I am very fortunate to have such a kind editor. It was so sweet to thank her. It is an intense amount of work to be an editor of a magazine and have a job. That was thoughtful of you, but then you are very thoughtful. Sending my love to you, Joni🦋❤️🤗

Such a mesmerizing and dolorous poem. There’s a sense of yearning and immense sorrow here. The ending reverberates with pain. The mythological setting adds an aspect of dreamlike timelessness. This is fascinating and beautiful writing, Joni. 🙂
