Emily Dickinson Untitled 1 by Don Matthews

A colored enhanced photo of poetess Emily Dickinson

Oh to write like Emily –

Dickinson – I mean

Metaphoric genius

Rarely ever seen

Every line a puzzle

Waiting to unwind

Taut with strange intensity

Created in her mind

Emily is hard to

Understand at first

What’s this line here meaning?

What’s this mean – this verse?

Choosing to be solitary

Her only friend her mind

Unknowing of her genius

Unsure of others’ minds

Instructions on her death-bed?

Burn my life of verse

Deny the world your brilliance?

No others can immerse?

Oh to write like Emily

Dickinson, who did

Shake the world of literature

To what you did – and hid

Don’s poetic tribute to Emily Dickinson is more than simple praise. It’s the dissection of a creative mind that wrote its way into readers’ hearts and souls. Why this thought? Why these words? Why do I wish to read them again and again? There’s no explanation for genius and often such lives can be lonely and piteous. To Emily and her decisions, may she live on.
    Congratulations Don!

What a beautiful poem. Love her poem and you just reminded me that I still haven’t finished the book of poem by her. She can extract philosophical meaning from any mundane object.

        1. Written a couple of years ago in my Emily phase. I like her complexity. A puzzle to unravel. To think she wanted everything burned on her death. Her sister denied her wishes. Thank goodness for the world of literature……
