Murder House by Dawn Pisturino

This house was her prison,

And when she died,

She thought she would be free.

But her soul became trapped

Between the bitter walls, —

This house of misery

And pain

And drunkenness

And decay.

This house was her prison,

And when she died,

She thought she would be free.

She was trapped between the walls –

And could not escape –

This house of despair

And loud voices

And violence

And blood.

This house was her prison,

And when she died,

She thought she would be free.

But she remained trapped

Between the walls of her lethal prison –

This house of death

That took her life

And hid her body

Between the walls.

She could not break free.

Dawn’s poem takes the reader into the realm of terror and desperation. A house that holds on and refuses to let go. A soul that seeks liberation unaware that death has played a sinister prank. Confined to remain within the same walls that made it suffer when alive, there is no place to hide when one’s home is also one’s grave.
    Congratulations Dawn!

  4. Wow Dawn, a very emotional and powerful tale of the horror of abuse and feeling trapped. I loved the vehicle you used, the format to begin again each new verse.. like the cycle she lived over and over…even after death. Very moving poem!

Dawn, this is a truly beautiful piece of writing. You can feel the aching and horror of confinement and pain in each line. I especially like how you repeated the one phrase over-emphasizing how bad the suffering was and how there was no escape for her. Great piece with a powerful punch!
