Onion Tears by Britta Benson

I love onion tears,

their source always clear,

undisputed, undiluted,

matter of fact,

self explanatory.

Not like sadness tears,

silly sausage tears,

confused confession tears,

overwhelmed panic tears,

angry frustration tears,

worst of all,

simple teary tears,

attacking at will,

never mine,

out of the blue,

the turquoise

and even the yellow.

I love onion tears,

know exactly

when they’ll begin

as I stand in my kitchen

knife in hand,

permission to dissect,

cut deeper,

sever and separate.

No metaphors here.

No mirrors, no trapdoors,

just the relief

of explicit clarity,

invitation to lean

into unhurried abundance,

enjoy the purge,

savour, even celebrate salt

from the faraway places

of my soul.

I love onion tears!

Britta’s poem crowns the onion as the undisputed vegetable tear-jerker. There’s no escaping the waterworks when confronted by that layered and pungent genius. It knows you want it, can’t live without it, and makes sure you suffer while you get to know it. I’ve cried many tears – don’t know if they were red or green – and no matter what I try, the onion remains victorious.
    Congratulations Britta!
